"The Ear Has No Memory" is the official documentary detailing the making of Oasis' 2005 album, "Don't Believe the Truth". Directed by Dick Carruthers and included on a bonus DVD in "Limited Edition" album pressings, the film gets its title from producer Dave Sardy's observation on how ears lose perspective after repeated mixing sessions.
The film documents a major turning point for the band, following the complete discarding of their initial 2004 recording sessions with Richard Fearless. Moving to Olympic Studios in London and Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, the footage captures Dave Sardy taking over production while Oasis transitions into a collaborative unit with major songwriting contributions from Liam Gallagher, Gem Archer, and Andy Bell, plus Zak Starkey on drums.
Central to the release is candid studio footage showing the trial-and-error process of bringing tracks like Lyla, The Importance of Being Idle, and Let There Be Love into their final forms. Alongside these behind-the-scenes moments, frank band interviews reveal Noel and Liam reflecting on staying relevant and overcoming dead-end sessions, while highlighting Dave Sardy's no-nonsense approach to pushing the band out of their comfort zone to make critical arrangement decisions.
While release packaging often lists a total runtime of "22 mins approx," the documentary feature itself runs for 16 minutes and 46 seconds. The longer packaging figure reflects the entire DVD contents, which also includes the official Lyla music video (4:17) and end credits.
